“One of the ways we have chosen to give back to our community is through our weekly offerings in Sunset Chapel,” said Sunset Home Campus Pastor Dave Anfenson. “Each month, we adopt a different charity and support them with what people attending the services have given through the month. There are three things we do when we adopt a new charity. First, we set aside time in our service for education regarding the charities mission. Second, we pray for the work they are doing in our communities. Third, we practice becoming the answer to our prayers through giving.”
In September, the residents of Sunset Home decided to donate to Hurricane Harvey relief. This endeavor was very well received by residents and their families, raising $1,000. These funds were divided up and sent to two churches that were affected by the storm.
In October, the congregation decided to donate offerings to the Family Abuse Center in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which raised $350. In November, $250 was raised for Community Cancer Association of Waco.
“One of my favorite things about Sunset Home is that life doesn’t stop once you get here,” said Pastor Anfenson. “If you enjoyed community, a vibrant spiritual life, art, joy, laughter or giving to your community before you got here, you can continue to enjoy those things once you move in.”
It has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with what Sunset residents have been passionate about throughout their lives. If they were interested in gardening, they can adopt a beautification project in the city. If they were involved in supporting people who are fighting cancer, they can support someone doing that in our community.
“The opportunities are endless,” said Pastor Dave, “and it has been a gift to our congregation to partner with others in central Texas to share the love of Christ.”
