Volunteer Opportunities

Since our inception in the mid-1950s, Lutheran Sunset Ministries has enjoyed a strong support network of volunteers, including those from among our residents, as well as from the broader community beyond the Sunset campus. Volunteers often boast intergenerational ties to Sunset, from parents to grandparents having been residents. Serving in many capacities, the Sunset Volunteer Auxiliary makes a significant contribution to the type and quality of services we are able to offer here. Simply put, they are a welcome and crucial part of day-to-day life at Sunset. Their mission is to improve the lives of those served by our programs. In addition to the countless hours spent volunteering on campus and with residents throughout the year, the Auxiliary hosts two major fundraising activities:

The Pot O’ Gold Thrift Store opened its doors in 2001 to serve as a primary fundraising project of the Auxiliary. Through the sale of donated items, Pot O’ Gold has provided funding for numerous projects for the residents of Sunset. The Store is open each Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is located at 305 South Avenue Q (in the former Luckenbach Residence building). To get more information on making donations or volunteering to Pot O’ Gold, call 254.675.3001.

  • Benefit Quilt Auction quilt

Since 1991, Sunset has hosted the spectacular annual Benefit Quilt Auction.  Each year, approximately 100 quilts are donated by more than 60 church congregations, groups and individuals throughout Texas and auctioned off to provide needed equipment and furnishings for our residents. The auction was always held on the third Saturday in October at the Clifton City Park Armory in conjunction with the day-long community event, Oktoberfest.

Due to the diminishing art of hand quilting and the increased success of the Pot O’ Gold Thrift Store, our volunteers have voted to forgo this event. On behalf of the Volunteer Auxiliary, we thank everyone for their participation in this event. In the last 26 years, you’ve helped our ministry raise thousands of dollars, which were invested back into Lutheran Sunset Ministries. We cannot thank you enough for your support throughout the years. We ask that our donors find other worthy causes to donate their beautiful quilts to in the future.
